Quinn For The Win

I am Pat Quinn

I am fighting ALS.

Who am I?

My name is Patrick Quinn and I am 30 years old. I was born and raised in Yonkers, NY in Westchester County, a graduate of both Iona Prep and Iona College, and recently moved to Queens, NY to live with my amazing girlfriend Jennifer Flynn. My life changed earlier this year. On March 8, 2013, I was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig ’s disease. I was always very active and took pride in being athletic. I never imagined the day I would not be able to shoot a basketball, but that day has come. I am a fighter and remain positive through this difficult time. I thank my amazing family, friends, and especially Jenn for keeping that internal fire to fight so strong! I know the road ahead may be difficult, but I am ready to give this disease everything I have and more. Let the battle begin….

What is ALS?

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients begin to suffer from muscle weakness and muscle atrophy. They can lose the ability to easily handle simple tasks like shaving or buttoning a shirt. In the later stages of the disease, Patients may become completely paralyzed. ALS is a disease with no known cure.
